Old South Church Christmas Craft Fair

Alright, I'm no longer in denial about it pretty much being Winter now.  Fine, fine.  It's cold.  It snowed today.  Again.
But... That also means that the holidays are upon us!  I LOVE Christmas so much, for purely non-religious reasons.  The lovely music that never changes, the leafy garlands and pine-smelling wreaths everywhere, red berries, snow, beautifully-wrapped gifts with big ribbon-bows, hot chocolate, cider and eggnog with cinnamon, twinkling lights and giant, animatronic santas that would be tacky any other time of year, ice-skating, and that love-your-brother vibe.  I think that vibe is my favorite.  That warmth.  I love the palette of this time of year, the white, red, green.  It's abundant and alive in the midst of a time of year that can be a bit bleak here in New England, before everything renews in the Spring.  Last year, I went to midnight mass at this unique Catholic church in Waltham, and the service was mutli-cultural, with singing from Congolese congregants, pine-bow decor from its Italian congregants, and all of this hushed singing in the darkened church and candle-lighting throughout the service that was just wonderful.  Looking forward to exploring a new church of different denomination this year, and experiencing some new traditions.
It's also a crazy, crazy time for a small independent jeweler/artist/crafter like me.  I am grateful for all of the opportunities, and wonderful customers.  But I am in complete work-mode.  I'll be doing a few craft shows in December, beginning with the Old South Church Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday, December 1st.  The venue for this show is stunning, a very old, exquisite church in the heart of Boston, with all the charm a church of its age brings.  From what I've seen, they deck it out quite extravagantly for Christmas as well, so I'm just excited to get to be there!  If you're in the Boston area, come by 645 Boylston Street (Copley Square) between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM and say hi!

Happy holidays!

2012 Holiday Shopping Expo

This Saturday is the 2012 Holiday Shopping Expo, a show extravaganza on the South Shore.  We'll be vending there, at 100 Coddington Street, in Quincy, from 10 AM to 4 PM.  There will be a TON of vendors there, and I've never done this particular show before, so I really have no idea what to expect.  I do know that the proceeds go to the Montclair PTO, which is pretty cool.  It has a holiday theme, which feels a little premature in early November, but considering we've already had several inches of snow here in Boston, perhaps not!  It'll be a good time, complete with Santa and cookie decorating.  You can check out the event page on Facebook, here.  I hope to see you all there!

Magenta and Chartreuse

I'm clinging to the last bits of color I can, as the landscape loses the remainder of its bright red berries and golden leaves.  So, I made a treasury list, with vibrant magenta and charteuse!

Etsy Gift Cards Have Arrived!

http://www.etsy.com/listing/95314280/hair-bridal-accessories-purple-feathered?ga_search_query=purpleBienvenue, folks!

If you have a wonderful group of friends with diverse and quirky tastes like I do, you've probably been there.  A birthday rolls around, an engagement party, a baby shower.  You know that busting out the Target gift card or the generic bath-salt/foot scrub set as a gift for this particular friend just won't cut it.  You want to give them something super-cool and unique but, alas, the risk is purchasing something that will result in an awkward, blank stare or expression of horror.  A gift that they awkwardly push aside and you inherently know they just don't like.  Unique gifts can also mean you just plain get it wrong, and end up with something that originated in the best of intentions, but landed in future-re-gift territory.  But now, Etsy has a solution!
Introducing, Etsy Gift Cards!  Now, you can purchase a site-wide gift card on Etsy, that can be used in many of Etsy's shops (all shops that feature Direct Check-out, which Hieropice does!).  Now, you don't have to know EXACTLY what that quirky/custom/unique/one-of-a-kind gift your bff wants is ahead of time, you can let them choose for themselves!  And, your sister can get a custom-made nursery-sign for her baby-on-the-way without giving away its gender before it's born.  It's all kinds of neat.
http://www.etsy.com/listing/96278114/personalized-wooden-wall-letters-nursery

I have a good friend who was recently engaged and is definitely an off-beat bride, but I couldn't, for the life of me, think of what to get her to celebrate her engagement.  She had pinned all kinds of Etsy items to her Pinterest wedding board, but I didn't know if she actually WANTED that bright purple flower/feather fascinator for her wedding, or just thought the concept was cool.  Now, you can avoid the dilemma I had, and get your independent-thinking friend an Etsy gift card, and let her deck her whole bridal-party out in purple fascinators if she wants to!  I am so excited about the gift cards, and pretty much all of my family-members can expect one in their Xmas stockings this year!  You can read more about the details here, and purchase the gift cards at etsy.com/giftcards.

Happy shopping!

Black and White Maasai Beaded Necklace

Maasai Beaded Necklace by Hieropice

Considering the last item I introduced, Hieropice's Winter White Terrarium Necklace, and my newest item, one might think I've kicked color to the curb.  Not so!  Just embracing the absence of color, and the striking nature of sharp contrast.  Introducing Hieropice's Black and White Maasai Beaded Necklace.

Contrast between two colors brings both to life, and enhances each.  And in fact, I think I misspoke, referring to black and white as the absence of color, when really, they are colors in their own right (thinking visually here, not light spectrum-wise).  I wear black to feel sophisticated, polished, maybe a little mysterious?  And white makes me feel regal and elegant.  The two together?  Judge for yourselves.  It's a special color relationship, for sure.  I am definitely a fan, hope you are too!

Cheers and pumpkin lattes,

Blanched and Bleached

https://www.etsy.com/listing/112266090/winter-white-terrarium-necklace#

I've waxed poetic about Fall, because it's just my favorite, and I love everything about it.  I want to pretend Winter will never come, though the dropping temperatures here in Massachusetts beg to differ.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/112266090/winter-white-terrarium-necklace#  We have strong associations between the color white and the Winter season, perhaps because of the snow and ice and absence of the colorful flowers of Spring or bright leaves of Autumn.  There are all these (supposed) fashion rules about colors and their corresponding seasons, wear vivid colors in Spring, muted colors in Winter.  Green, orange, yellow are supposedly Spring/Summer colors, while navy blue, grey, and black are for Winter.  Meh!  I think we need color most in Winter, when it's hard to find, when our moods could really use a boost.  But nonetheless, our associations are what they are.
I love color.  And usually, Hieropice's wares are super-saturated, I strive to cover every tone in the rainbow with at least one piece in my inventory.  But I wanted to create something "wintry," a break from the usual, colorful Hieropice look.  So came about the Winter White Terrarium Necklace, now available at Hieropice on Etsy
I have to say, I'm kind of in love with it.  It's such a departure for me, but it makes me feel calm and serene.  A swath of white sand, a tiny white stone, a branch of pale lichen and a tiny blush flower.  It looks like the place you'd go to take a break from the world, to be silent and contemplative.  One day, perhaps I'll build a life-size garden resembling this necklace, I can see that being striking and intriguing; a landscape of all white.
Hope you enjoy the necklace, and the remainder of Fall!

;)

Breast Cancer Awareness

https://www.etsy.com/listing/102593428/terrarium-necklace-for-charity-susan-g

Hi all,

It's mid-October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  I know the C-word is tough to talk about, a lot of us have really challenging associations with cancer.  My paternal grandmother battled breast cancer and, before she passed away, the constant threat of relapse or recurrence made her cancer an ever-present, unwelcome guest.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/102593428/terrarium-necklace-for-charity-susan-g
As a woman, I feel like breast cancer is a bit of an axe suspended over me, that I'm praying will never fall, and I know a lot of women can relate.  We all hope, should we ever get that terrifying diagnosis, that we'll be able to beat it.  But current cancer treatments are as tough, or perhaps tougher, than the disease itself.  Chemotherapy and radiation, traditional cancer treatments, come with severe side-effects.  Mastectomies and lumpectomies are major surgeries, that can deform a woman's body, and completely alter her sense of self.  And, the means of breast cancer detection, breast exams and mammograms are, well, unpleasant.  The short-story is, we need to develop better detection and treatment methods for this disease.  The Susan G. Komen Foundation is a front-runner in that effort, doing research into treatment options, funding cancer screenings all over the country, and offering funding for top researchers in the field.
To support the Komen Foundation's efforts, I created a terrarium necklace, in the Foundation's classic pink, to raise funds for the organization.  30% of the proceeds from each sale of Hieropice's pink Terrarium Necklace for Charity will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  This month is the month to make a big push for breast cancer research, so I hope you'll purchase a necklace, and forward the link on to someone else who might!  Beyond being adorable, this necklace is for a good cause.
     Happy October, everyone!

Quick, in Orange and Green

http://www.etsy.com/treasury/NjE2MzQ4OXwyNzIwODM5NDEz/lime-green-and-orange?ref=pr_treasury

Bienvenue, folks.  Posting a brief one today, to share a treasury list I recently made, called Lime Green and Orange.  I posted before about treasury lists and how cool they are, and this one features some artists in the Boston area, because, you know, I have to represent. ;)  I went with an orange and green palette this time, which totally work together, just think of pumpkins!  I see orange and green as Fall colors; Autumn leaves and Granny Smith apples and the like, so it seemed appropo for the season!  I hope you enjoy it!

Cheers!

Lovely Surprise

Aloha!
JP Rocks and Rolls was fun, and I got to meet a number of my fellow Etsy-ans in real life/in-person, as the digital and corporeal worlds collided.  Yay for communing with fellow artists!
I had a moment today (a good one), as I discovered Hieropice had been featured in Madalynne's lovely blog, here.  Madalynne loves terrariums/terraria as much as I do, it seems, and wrote a piece celebrating the best of them!  Check it out!

Have a good one, all.

JP Rocks and Rolls

I'm a little late in posting this, but tomorrow, Hieropice will be a vendor at JP Rocks and Rolls in Jamaica Plain, MA.  JP is a unique place, very quirky, with a lot of creative people in it, so I really enjoy hanging there.  The show tomorrow also has an old record sale portion, so if you actually own a functioning record-player, it might be worth checking out.  It's 12-3 PM, at 45 Danforth Street, JP.
Anyhoo, hope everyone is enjoying a lovely Saturday, the sun's actually out here!

What on Earth is That?!

 Good evening all!

So, it occurred to me, some folks may have no clue what these "treasury lists" I occasionally post about are, or even what "Etsy" is, for that matter!  So I want to do a quick post to answer both of those questions.  Let's start with Etsy.

Very simply, Etsy is an online marketplace featuring vendors who either create/sell handmade or vintage items.  It's a place to go if you're looking for something unique, different, cool, quirky, specific, or custom.  So, if you really like a certain style of dress but would love to have one in a very specific type of fabric, Etsy is the place to go.  Or, maybe you're really into something specific, like, I dunno, koi fish or The Hunger Games or an obscure foreign show none of your friends have ever heard of, and would love some kind of accessory, a throw pillow or necklace or original poster featuring imagery of that thing you love.  It's likely you can either find it on Etsy, or get an artist on Etsy to make it for you for an affordable price.

All of the shops on the Etsy site are independent, their owners make or find their goods in their given location and ship from there.  Etsy functions to maintain the site, make sure vendors and buyers are happy and are keeping up their ends of the transactions, and facilitate interactions between buyers/sellers.  A lot of Etsy sellers also sell their work in small shops, galleries, independent studios and their own independent websites (like Hieropice, which is available at the Blue Cloud Gallery and Abeille).  But, you generally won't find Etsy vendors' stuff in large chains like Target or Macy's, which is why having an international website to sell from, like Etsy, is important.  I host Hieropice on Etsy because I appreciate selling in an arena where everyone is hand-making their goods.  We're all trying to make something new and interesting, relying on our own skills and talents to create things we hope you will all like.  It's a lot of work, and I know Etsy buyers understand that.  But, the best way to get a sense of Etsy.com is to check it out, I highly recommend it!
Etsy gives users the opportunity to create virtual collections of items from Etsy shops they like called "Treasury Lists."  A treasury is a collection of a maximum of 16 items, which show up on your screen as little thumbnails with their shop's name below, that can be absolutely anything you like.  Like a curator at a museum putting together an exhibit, you create a treasury by thinking about how the items you love work together, what characteristics they share, taking into account how they've been photographed by their sellers. I'm drawn to peacock-related items, graphic African prints, blown glass, nature and vibrant jewelry, so, when I'm browsing around Etsy and I come across items like that, I often "favorite" them, a lot of those items are in the treasuries I've created.

Treasuries are important though, beyond just being awesome to look at and pretty.  The treasuries Etsy users have created are the first thing you see when you visit Etsy.com, they are the items that appear on Etsy's homepage.  Take a look, you'll see someone's carefully-prepared treasury featured there.  When someone takes the time to craft an Etsy treasury they always hope others will view and appreciate it, and maybe, if we're lucky, our treasury will appear on Etsy's home page!
Hopefully that all makes sense.  If I haven't bored you to tears, I wanted to share my most recent treasury list with you, Here.  It's in one of my favorite palettes, teal/robin's egg blue & brown, and I love it.  I envision a room in my home one day being a wash of teal and brown, but until then, this treasury list will have to suffice!  Enjoy all!

Announcing a new retailer!

Hi all,

I hope everyone's Autumn is starting out on a good note.  The Gifford Shelter fundraiser was a lot of fun, it doesn't feel like work when you get to snuggle adorable kitties periodically throughout the day!  Thank you to everyone who came and made purchases, your money really does go to an amazing cause and the Gifford kitties deserve it!
And guess what else?  You can now purchase Hieropice's jewelry at a wonderful bead/jewelry/clothing boutique in Brookline, Mass, called Abeille.  I love this store so much because, let's face it, it's purty, and have been a long-time customer, so I'm really excited that they'll be selling our wares.  The store has such a great vibe, with it's contemporary romantic decor and vibrant spectrum of color.  I have spent many an hour there sifting through baskets of seed beads and strands of semiprecious stones.  If you've never been and you're in MA, Abeille is definitely worth checking out.  It's a lovely place to pass a couple hours on a crisp Fall day.  Have I mentioned Fall is my favorite season?  Summer heat is not for me but Fall, Fall I can get behind.  Enjoy, everybody.

Happy Fall!

Gifford Shelter Fall Festival

Tomorrow, Sunday, September 23rd is the Ellen Gifford Cat Shelter of Brighton's Fall Festival.  The shelter is "no-kill," meaning they don't euthanize cats to accommodate additional cat surrenders or due to a cat's age.  At the Gifford, cats are cared for until they find a home.  One of the Gifford's long-term residents, Bo, was with us for 15 years!  I've been a volunteer at the Gifford since 2004, and watched its many changes over the years.  Many cats have come and gone, some, bittersweet, as I tend to fall in love with them but am so glad when they finally find a home.  The Gifford recently rebuilt it's main facility and added two outdoor enclosures for the cats to roam in, one just for feral (non-socialized) cats.  They also house a number of hard-to-adopt cats (FIV-positive, diabetic, behavioral issues, elderly, etc.) and take excellent care of them.
Tomorrow's event is a fund-raiser, and an opportunity for visitors to meet the cats, as well as eat some goodies, participate in family-friendly activities and peruse crafts for sale.  Hieropice will be vending there, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to support such a wonderful cause!  The event is 1 PM to 5 PM at 30 Undine Road in Brighton, right near Boston College.  Check out the event info on Facebook, and Gifford's promo on Youtube.  Hope to see you all there!

The colors of Autumn

Today, an Etsy user made a treasury featuring our Lapis Lazuli and Brass Earrings, and I just love the palette she used.  Mixes of cobalt and navy blue with shots of chartreuse and vivid yellow.  The colors work so beautifully together, who woulda thunk it?!  I'm thinking these hues will really be popular this Fall.  Check it out: October Hues, by Film Shirley

Cheers!

Want to Dance?

Happy Sunday evening all (or not, depending on when you're reading this).  We are in that lovely crux betwixt Summer and Fall, where the weather is (albeit a bit unpredictable) cool and crisp but full of sunshine here in New England, and I hope you are all enjoying it!  I definitely am, I took a jaunt through the SOWA/SOWA Vintage markets in South Boston this afternoon; lots of really fascinating items, and, in the vintage market, anything you could possibly imagine.  Mostly everything you never knew you needed, until you saw it, and thought, "I DO want a glass chemistry distiller tube!"  It was a lot of fun, playing with all of the do-dads.  I hunted for a really special terrarium vessel but didn't find one this time, but I hope to visit both markets again soon!
Next Saturday (September 15th) is the World Damba Festival at Tufts University, at which I will be vending.  I have a number of new terrariums and jewelry designs to debut at the Festival, and I am really excited to do this festival in particular for a number of reasons.  Tufts is my Alma Mater, I attended it simultaneously as the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  I haven't been back on campus in years, and how cool to be there representing my business, after completing my education there years before!  Feeling very proud as a female entrepreneur of color.

But the real fun is the festival.  Damba is a Northern Ghanaian celebration with roots in Islamic tradition, with an abundance of dance and song and food.  My partner is Ghanaian, and has missed elements of home (the ones we all do when we're away, food, family, social gatherings), and I am really looking forward to his opportunity to reconnect.  It'll be wonderful to learn a bit more about Ghanaian culture, and I know the energy of this festival will be amazing.  The festival runs Friday through Sunday, and Hieropice will be vending 10 AM to 6:30 PM on Saturday, September 15th (next weekend!).  Hope to see you all there!

Cheers,
Dara

Last Day!

Today (Wednesday, the 29th) is the final day of Arts on the Arcade, in Government Center.  Stop by for some one-of-a-kind crafts, locally-grown produce, and excellent live music!  We'll be there, under our tent, 11 AM to 3 PM!

Post Arts on the Arcade, a Treasury, & Cancer Research

Arts on the Arcade was a lot of fun today.  I came home to find Hieropice's fundraising/awareness necklace, that I designed to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, was featured in this social-justice-themed treasury by Theresa from TAKJewelryDesigns.  It's wonderful to have support in getting the word out there about Hieropice's fundraising efforts; so many of us have had a loved one diagnosed with cancer, it's a disease that warrants all of the research possible.  We hope the proceeds from the sale of our Terrarium Necklace for Charity aids in the important work that the Komen Foundation does!

Pig in a...Glass?

pig terrarium necklace
Recently, a customer requested a mini terrarium necklace for her sister, who has a pet pig.  The customer had an existing terrarium she loved with a tree and blue eggs inside, so I created a pendant incorporating elements she mentioned with some Hieropice twists.  The miniature pig was a particular challenge!  The opening of the glass vial is only 3 mms wide, so creating a pig with enough signature details (a coiled tail, miniature snout, etc.) that could be maneuvered into the vial without being damaged.  I'm pleased with what I created, and really hope the customer, and her sister, are happy with it!

Where I Have Been

So, because I have a day job, I’ve migrated to the Berkshires for the next 6 weeks. If you’re not familiar with the Berkshires, they’re a mountain range bordering Massachusetts and New York (and possibly some other states I’m not aware of).
Long ago, when I was a young artist, a teacher at my school nominated me to participate in a week-long arts-intensive program for youth, held at an old dorm in the woods. We’d see performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, dancers at Jacob’s Pillow, and a myriad of famous plays. We’d study our chosen area of arts interest; visual arts, vocal music, theater, etc. for several hours a day, and sleep at the dorms at night, 2 hours away from home in Boston. It seemed like an amazing opportunity.  Unfortunately, the week I went was a special one, where Seiji Ozawa and Wynton Marsalis were filming a music special on campus. We (the students) spent the week sitting in a hot barn, while the celebs did take after take. Parents were pissed. I can’t say I learned much, but, years later when I was invited back as a teenager to be a Counselor In Training, I went for it, and had the time of my life.  I wish those teenage friendships had lasted, but, they went the way of most things teen-age.
This Summer, I was asked to come back as faculty. I was honored to teach visual arts in the same program I’d attended as a child, and excited at the prospect of working with kids whole love the arts, have art-skills, and really want to be here.

It comes with challenges. The traditional camp culture seems at-odds with art-making/artists to me; how do you maintain the energy to “rah rah” your way through a lengthy school-bus ride after spending 3 hours painting?  I can’t say it’s in my nature to make hours of conversation with a ten year old about dorm rooms, truncated showers and the intricacies of their talent show presentations. I don’t have much interest in entertaining, or being the star of  the show.  I’m more likely to go for a glass of wine and a good movie. Maybe some Words With Friends?
But my students are great. They want to create things. They’re talented and smart. They’re mature for their ages, and are coming into themselves.  I enjoy working with them and look forward to seeing what they’ll create. They lack confidence still, but have curiosity for days. We’re working around the theme of traditions this week, since we saw “Fiddler on the Roof” last evening. Get it? “Traditions”? Yeah. I’m having my students consider their traditions, and what is “traditional” to them, and dismantle/modify/recreate a traditional, recycled, object.  They’ve turned juice bottles into dog bowls, soda cans into robots, milk cartons into robots, egg crates into a field of flowers. I had them collaborate, and they’re working on a makeshift messaging  system with a lightbulb indicator. Are they geniuses? Yes. I think they are.

While I’m here, Hieropice on Etsy is still open, I’m still creating, and, finding inspiration in the mountains, gorgeous forests, flora and fauna here. There are chipmunks everywhere. Deer. Groundhogs and hawks. The logs are mossy and lichenous. It’s the perfect place to make the things I love.  But I haven't seen a mailbox, or a mailman for that matter since I got here, so, I may be a little delayed in getting those shipments out.  I'm finding ways around the challenges though!
I don’t have much down-time though, so the blog updates might be less frequent in the coming weeks. I will do my best to keep you updated!

Finally!

Recently, a good friend, Jaime Parker, told me she'd be doing the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, a 60-mile fundrasing walk to raise awareness/raise funds for breast cancer research.  (You can read more about the walk: here).  She was looking for support in gathering funds for this daunting challenge, and asked if I could help out.

Like a lot of people, I have personal experience with breast cancer; my grandmother battled it for most of her life.  It's a life-changing diagnosis, and the current treatments (mastectomy, radiation, chemotherapy, etc.) can be devastating, and often only temporarily effective.  We are definitely in need of better treatments that will improve patients' quality of life and keep them healthy long-term, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation is doing important research toward that end.

So, I created a new Mini Terrarium Necklace, in the signature pink of the cancer awareness movement, to help Jaime raise funds for the Komen 3-Day.  30% of all proceeds from the sale of this necklace will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  I hope you'll support their efforts, and Jaime's, and buy it!  The break-throughs they may make could change our lives one day.

With lurve,

Dara

So, What's New?

A customer ordered a custom Lost World Mini Terrarium Necklace from Hieropice on Etsy, and I wanted to share a photo of what I created for her.  AND, I've posted a new pair of handmade earrings on Etsy!  A new style, inspired by Spring flora, available in two colors.  They're petite and adorable, lightweight glass flowers with glass leaves.  Green with green, and purple with green. I love them.  They're available here.
